    When I was about three years old, I distinctly remember being too small to see what was on top of the table. A couple of years later, when I could see those objects, I thought the world around me had grown smaller. In a way, it did, as I experienced, lived, captured, remembered, and shared the space repeatedly. This sense of the world shrinking was exaggerated during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing new behaviours and modes of interaction to emerge. Continually shaping our modern lives, virtual technologies redefine how we access and share information and stories or even explore new places. Thanks to the exponential increase in our computing powers, we live in hyper- connectivity, constantly in sync with our multiple screens, tabs, devices and profiles. Smartphones serve as two- way communication bringing the world in and letting the home out. As people increasingly rely on digital tools for work, communication, and leisure, the boundaries between physical and digital realms have become blurred. The overlap of our stories, information and spaces has subsequently led to challenges in managing the clutter and disorganization that can arise in physical and digital realms, affecting productivity, well-being, and overall user experience. In response, this thesis aims to create a hybrid space that carefully calibrates information and architecture to initiate interactivity within home settings. The thesis adopts a human-centred design approach, including user interviews and iterative prototyping, to understand how augmented reality (AR) augments reality. Research focuses on young adults, primarily students and working professionals who have access to smart devices where increasing demand for personalized experiences present an ideal environment for AR to grow and thrive. Overall, the research and prototypes are representative of AR as a tool for novelty in familiarity, offering new ways of enhancing interactions and immersive experiences within the home. I believe this synthesis of our physical and digital elements will lead to a de-cluttered and productive mode of engagement

    Functional outcome in surgical fixation of fibrous dysplasia of proximal femur

    Background: Fibrous dysplasia is a rare benign intramedullary fibro-osseous lesion. Surgical management is usually indicated in pathological fractures, symptomatic patients due to pain and due to deformity. The aim of this study was to summarize the functional results and to investigate surgical treatment methods by conducting a retrospective study of patients with fibrous dysplasia (FD) in the proximal femur.Methods: This study is a retrospective study using patient’s medical records, including analysis of 14 patients with fibrous dysplasia of proximal femur treated at Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences. The primary outcome was success of the procedure according to the Musculoskeletal tumour society score (MSTS). Secondary outcomes, which were assessed at one year and at the end of follow up in terms of revision free survival and change in femoral neck-shaft angle over time. Results: Analysis of data showed that revision-free survival was 85% after a median follow-up of 2 years. Revision was necessary in one patient for structural failure due to a fracture distal to Dynamic hip screw and other patient due to progressive deformity after being operated with broad DCP. At the end of follow-up 85% of all patients had good walking ability and all patient were pain free. Conclusions: Symptomatic fibrous dysplasia involving proximal femur needs to be operated to relieve pain due to biomechanical instability, to prevent and treat pathological fractures and to correct deformities

    Functional and radiological outcome in surgically managed posterior wall and column fractures of acetabulum

    Background: The incidence of acetabular fractures has increased following road traffic accidents. The aim of the study is to evaluate functional and radiological outcome in surgically managed posterior wall and column fractures of acetabulum.Methods: This is a prospective study done at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad between May 2018 and May 2020. The sample size is 20 patients between the age group 18-60 years who presented to the hospital with closed posterior wall and/or column fractures of acetabulum with or without posterior dislocation of hip joint. Functional outcome is assessed by using the modified Merle D’ Aubigne Postel clinical grading system, radiological outcome by Matta et al and perioperative complication are assessed by retrospectively analyzing medical records and radiographics examination.Results: Functional outcome according to Merle D’ Aubigne and Postel score 16 patients (75%) showed good, 3 patients (20%) showed fair, 1 patient (5%) showed poor outcome. Radiological outcome according to Matta criteria, 16 patients (75%) showed excellent quality of joint reduction, 4 patients (25%) showed good quality of reduction of joint. There was significant correlation between anatomic reduction of the joint surface and functional outcome of the patient in our study (p value <0.05).Conclusions: Accurate joint reduction is of utmost importance in reduction of posterior wall or column fractures of acetabulum as posterior wall is the weight bearing zone. Functional outcome depends on fracture type, associated injuries, selection of patient, time between injury and surgery and postoperative rehabilitation

    Protective effect of Berberis asiatica root on biochemical and histopathological changes in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats

    Background: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Berberis asiatica root extract (BAE) against streptozotocin induced elevated blood glucose level and other liver and kidney functions changes in adult male Wistar rats.Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into five groups of six rats in each (Groups I-V). Group I and Group II served as normal control and disease control, respectively. Group III received standard anti-diabetic drug glibenclamide (5mg/kg), while Group IV and Group V received the low dose (250mg/kg) and high dose (500mg/kg) of BAE. Serum blood glucose, SGOT, SGPT, ALP, total bilirubin, BUN, serum creatinine, TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C, and VLDL-C were estimated using standard methods. After collection of samples for biochemical evaluation, the pancreas from each animal was isolated and examined for histological changes.Results: BAE and glibenclamide treated disease rats showed significant (p <0.05) decrease in blood glucose concentration. Treatment with BAE at 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg in Group IV and V and standard drug glibenclamide in Group III showed significant (p <0.05) reduction in the level of liver function substances such as SGOT, SGPT, ALP and total bilirubin as compared to disease group, as well as showed significant (p <0.05) decrease in renal panel. Liver function parameters were significantly (p <0.05) improved in groups treated with BAE. Histopathological analysis revealed the protective effect of BAE against streptozotocin induced damage to islets of Langerhans.Conclusions: This study showed the destruction of islets of Langerhans and elevation in blood glucose level as well as alteration in other biochemical parameters were ameliorated by the effect of Berberis asiatica extract

    Effect of Ashwagandha and Aloe vera pretreatment on intestinal transport of buspirone across rat intestine

    The transport of buspirone across rat intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon) was studied by using the non-everted sac method. Rats were pretreated with ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Aloe vera juice for 7 days. The rats were sacrificed by using anesthetic ether, the intestinal segments were isolated and used for the studies. The probe drug (buspirone) solution was placed in the isolated intestinal sac. Samples were collected at preset time points and replaced with fresh buffer. The drug content in the samples was estimated using high performance liquid chromatography method. Control experiments were also performed. The results reveal that there was a significant (p < 0.05) difference compared to control, in the transport of buspirone from the intestinal sacs which were pretreated with ashwagandha and Aloe vera juice. It suggests that both ashwagandha and Aloe vera might be acting by inhibiting the transporters and enzymes which are responsible for transport/metabolism of buspirone.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire
